There are more than 20 indigenous groups living here today who make up over half the population, and over 65% of the land is owned by less than 2% of the population. Indeed, poverty is a way of life for most Guatemalans. Indigenous women in the highlands teach their daughters the ancient art of weaving that has been practiced by their ancestors for over 2,000 years while at the same time, thousands of young women and children work in factories assembling clothing for export.
