ItMoreMyth as story, myth as psychology, myth as record of the history of power: Listening to a Far Sea offers thought-provoking and at times comic and subversive responses to a wide range of themes and situation, both classical and contemporary. It exposes the violence underlying the muth of the hero. It satirises all manner of folly and foibles. And it celebrates a creative wisdom at home in the depths, like the elusive dolphin threading in half-moon arcs/through crystal darkness. What comes through very strongly in this collection of poetry is the way in which the classical may be turned to allegory or emblem, to physiological portrait or moral fable, to colloquial appropriation and, of course, to comedy. Faheys range in this respect is remarkable, and her achievement important. Listening to a Far Sea by Diane Fahey
